This Week at SHOP

SHOP’s first Saturday afternoon Flea Market with lots of cool stuff to look and to buy, original art, clothes, useful things, collectibles, books and ephemera. Join in the last day of the year purge! Come on over with your stuff, set up a table or just donate it to ours, drink some mulled wine or hot cider and enjoy some good company! For the next two months we will have new and different things every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Join in on the letting go!

Timelapse Hogmanay: New Year’s Day Potluck Party at Fenn

We’ll be about 12 hours late to celebrate Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year’s celebration that normally starts on December 31 and goes on till daylight, but we’ll still be having a potluck dinner party at Fenn House starting at 6:30 pm on January 1st. There will be corned beef and cabbage as well as such traditional Hogmanay treats as shortbread, whiskey, and fruit cake. We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne in the Red Flag Saloon.

Dr. Monty Dobson and “America: From the Ground Up”
Dr. Monty Dobson – archaeological adventurer, university professor, and passionate spokesperson for American history – presents a preview of his forthcoming PBS series “America: From the Ground Up”, which explores archaeological sites and uses the clues from the past to tell hidden the history of America. Dobson will discuss the process of making a documentary for PBS as well as his efforts to turn his background in the social sciences into a career in film. 2012, USA, 45 min., DVD projection

Sunday Potluck, with Flutes!

Of course you knew we have a potluck every Sunday at 6pm. (You knew that, right?) Well, we do. Bring a dish to pass and something to drink; we have plenty of plates and interesting people to talk to.

This week we have a special treat: the Three Divas Flute Trio will be serenading eaters with a selection of holiday-themed music. Cheryl Boyle, Karen O’Mara, and Mary Snyder will play from 6:30 to 7:30.

6:30pm: Project Film

U of Chicago grads Sam McAllister and Megan Frestedt make sweet, poppy, smart music. They describe their debut album, Chicago, as “balancing between ethereal and dark and sweet and soulful, sometimes even strikingly righteous, Chicago is a mostly-happy-but-on-occasion-a-little-grim indie-pop record featuring ten tracks about skinny jeans, drug trafficking, and the intransience of the entire city of Minneapolis, MN. And just for good measure: growing up, art school, and the trials of starting a new life in a new city.” That sounds about right.

7:30: Zamin

Zamin’s sound comes from blending a lineup of classical instruments with a modern take on Hindustani vocals. Featuring two percussionists, classical guitar, strings, and Indian instruments such as taanpura and harmonium, Zamin sets new ground by creating an energetic feel from a lineup that is completely acoustic. “Zamin” itself means “earth” in Hindi, and the songs are sung in various Indian languages. The band is built on the concept of creating a harmony from the clash between the traditional and the modern, resulting in a live and lyrical sound that can appeal to wide audiences. The members include Zeshan Bagewadi, Josh Fink, Genevieve Guimond, Charlotte Malin, Eric Seligman, Dylan Frank, and Dave Eisenreich.

$5 donation at door. We will enjoy a night of good food and music together. Please bring finger foods for our potluck evening and some drinks to share!
